Day 1: Genesis 1-16

90 Days through the Bible

In the beginning, God created the world, and he did it in 6 days.  The beginning of Genesis covers several well-known and beloved stories, the story of creation, the Fall, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood as well as the beginning of Abram’s story.  These set up the foundation of our relationship with God; we are created in His image.  As I read the Bible in 90 days, I want to get to know God’s story better, and ultimately know Him more.  I love being reminded of the meaning of rainbows, God’s covenant that He will never destroy the world again through floods. As well as realizing that I missed in previous readings of Genesis the fact that Abram had to send his army to go rescue Lot.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

Passage: Genesis 1-16

Discovered:

God created:

  • Man was made in Gods image – created woman of man’s rib to be a helper. -> gave job to take care of Garden of Eden
  • Satan tricked Eve into eating from the Tree of knowledge & she gave t0 Adam
    • God kicked them out of Garden to protect them from eating from tree of life.  Had Cain & Abel. Cain -> farmer Abel -> keeper of sheep.  God did not approve of Cain’s offering.  Cain killed Abel. God cursed Cain but protected him from harm.  Adam & Eve had Seth to replace Abel.
  • Noah (Seth’s descendant) & his sons built the ark – rained 40 days – kept animals safe – killed everyone else.  Rainbow is God’s covenant to never do that (flood) again.
  • Noah’s sons gave birth to new nations. They tried to build a tower that reached the heavens (Tower of Babel) to make a name for themselves, but God confused their language (gave many new ones) and they stopped and dispersed throughout the earth.
  • Shem -> Terah & Abram
  • Terah, Abram & wife Sarai & Lot (Abrahm’s nephew) left Ur & settled in Haram
  • Lord promises Abram He will make a great nation from him, so Abram & Lot left for land of Canaan – land Lord promised Abram
  • There was famine – they left for Egypt.  Abram made Sarai say she was his sister.  This angered Pharaoh & they were kicked out
  • Abram & Lot separate their households, with Lot taking Jordan Valley.  Lot was then captured by the enemy & Abram took his army and rescued him.
  • The Lord made a covenant with Abram – giving his offspring the land after being servants for 400 years in another land (foreshadowing Moses)
  • Abram conceived a child with Hagar, Sarai’s servant. Sarai treated her badly and Hagar fled. The Lord stopped her & told her to return, her descendants would not be numbered.  She had a son, Ishmael.

Help me to remember:

that we are made in your image and your removal of Adam & Eve from the Garden of was an act of love and protection.

Lord, I ask that . . .

you help me to seek your purpose and your work, just as you gave Adam, Eve, Cain & Abel jobs, I ask that you show me your will for my life.

Heavenly Father, I am thankful for . . .

your beauty in your creation of the world, and the promises you have kept.
